Areen is a partner specialising in dispute resolution with over 15 years of diverse experience in managing commercial disputes in the Middle East, gained through both private and in-house legal practice. His practice focuses on dispute resolution, notably arbitration, as well as litigation. He has particular experience in real estate, construction, financial services, insolvency, and restructuring disputes.

Since joining Horizons & Co. eight years ago, Areen has been paramount to the success of numerous cases while acting as lead partner. Being familiar with both civil and common law legal systems, he often implements his knowledge of UAE law by providing legal advice and opinions to large international law firms, addressing detailed and complex subject matters.

His experience includes international arbitration matters under the rules of DIAC, ICC, SCCA, and IICRA, among other notable arbitral institutions. He regularly works with experts from various disciplines, such as delay, quantum, structural, and MEP as well as liquidators, forensic accountants and investigators.

He has extensive experience in dealing with arbitration matters under both civil and common law, collaborating with barristers and King’s Counsels on arbitration-related litigation matters before the UAE courts.

Fluent in both Arabic and English, Areen has studied and practiced law in both languages. He is highly regarded among his peers and clients, not only in the UAE but globally, and is recognized in all the leading international legal directories for his expertise. Areen is qualified in both England & Wales and the UAE.

Career History

Areen’s experience includes advising:

       A major UAE Free Zone on DIAC arbitration concerning a significant construction project valued at AED 100 million +, concerning complex extension of time, quantum and variation issues, together with counterclaims regarding, inter alia, construction defects.

       A high-profile Middle Eastern financial services provider on a multi-million AED DIAC arbitration, where our client acted as the financial advisor, concerning non-payment of success fees.

       A major Middle East-based EPC contractor in an AED 454 million ADCCAC arbitration relating to delays and disruption by the employer, a GCC government entity.

       A UAE construction company, in an approx.. AED 590 million dispute over a pumping station against a government entity.

       A UAE-based master developer in a DIAC arbitration in relation to a mixed-use infrastructure project in the UAE, successfully awarding our client approximately an approx. AED 55 million.

       A major Middle Eastern contractor in relation to an AED 100 million + dispute arising out of non-payment concerning the construction of a multi-purpose tower in the UAE, under DIAC arbitration rules.

        A major property investment and development company in an AED 800 million DIAC arbitration relating to an infrastructure development in the UAE.

       A major UAE construction contractor in DIFC-LCIA arbitration proceedings relating to a mixed-use development in the UAE.

       A multi-national contractor in a Geneva-seated ICC arbitration arising out of non-payments concerning a mixed-use development in the UAE valued at approx. AED 80 million.

       An unincorporated joint venture in a dispute commenced by a sub-contractor, a leading global engineering, management and development consultancy, in an ICC arbitration. The dispute relates to outstanding sums for work performed in relation to a large infrastructure project in the Middle East.

       A major GCC construction company in an arbitration to recover payments following the suspension of a large development project in Abu Dhabi. Our client acts as the main contractor in this project, which exceeds AED 2.1 billion in value.

       A member of an unincorporated joint venture in a dispute commenced by a subcontractor, a global architecture company, in an ICC arbitration. The subcontractor’s dispute, pertains to alleged outstanding sums for work performed in relation to a large infrastructure project in the Middle East.

       A world-renowned franchisor of cafés located in dozens of countries, including a large presence in the Middle East in an ICC arbitration.

       A major Chinese construction and engineering company, in a potential LCIA arbitration relating to construction dispute arising from its performance bond.

       A leading structural steel fabrication company in the UAE, in a DIAC arbitration dispute with a main contractor in relation to the development and construction of a large retail park.

       A very well-known UAE founded conglomerate on DIAC arbitration proceedings against a contractor.

       One of the leading privately-owned property developers in Dubai, in DIAC arbitration proceedings taken against it by a purchaser in relation to retail units.
